The world is consistent and repetitive in promoting its values, attitudes, and view of the truth. An article in the Kairos Journal* puts its it well, “The constant drip, drip, drip of the secularizing media is maddening. When they choose to advance an ungodly lifestyle, they do so in a thousand different ways, day after day, year after year—with sympathetic television characters, talk show bookings, generous coverage of photo ops, and adoring documentaries.”
Hence the reason why we need to be diligent to obey Deuteronomy 6:6-9 with our children and the students under our care. Consistency and repetition is key:
These words which I am commanding you today, shall be on your heart. You shall teach them diligently to your sons and shall talk of them when you sit in your house and when you walk by the way and when you lie down and when you rise up (vv.6-7).
This doesn’t mean we should be boring and dull and monotone and dry and uncreative, but it does mean we need to be careful not to assume our children ‘got it’ simply because they heard us teach it once. The Scripture doesn’t assume that, and neither should we.
